I have a NH TC33D with the adjustable steering wheel. The front to back steering adjuster, some kind of hydraulic adjustment arm, doesn't lock in place anymore. The dealer will look at it but I have to trailer it there. I don't particularly want to spend the day hauling my tractor around for a simple fix. Any experiences or suggestions?ThanksDean Q.

You've experienced NH's biggest engineering problem with the smaller TC series. My dealer told me that NH had a few scattered problems with the hydraulics on the steering column adjustment giving out. NH changed vendors and the problem has not surfaced in any machines made since.
The problem was not widespread enough for NH to issue a recall. If you are within warranty it should be covered but depending on your relationship with your dealer you may still be stuck with having to trailer it. ....

When I had my 1530 NH, it was inoperative in cold weather. It has the same technology as a hood or liftgate prop on a car/truck utilizing a gas charged cylinder to lock the tilt mechanism. One day when I went to make the adjustment, the rod that enters the top of the cylinder (what you can see looking down on the cylinder) blew the seal and shot pressurized fluid on my face. Luckily I had my glasses on or it would have been in my eyes sure enough. (the fluid sprayed out in one very quick spurt, and I would never have had enough time to blink) It was still in warranty at that time, so it didn't cost to have it fixed. Just glad I didn't lose my eyesight. I still think that rod mechanism should have some kind of shield over it to deflect the oil from spraying on anyone else. This is a very real life situation and I would like to warn other people to think twice about leaning/looking downwards at that mechanism when tilting the wheel on the baby boomers if it still is built that way. ....

Dean,
Same thing happened to my TC29D. I tried the time tested WD 40 (fixes anything!) but it seemed not to work. Lo and behold about a month later the WD40 worked into the piston & freed it.

I still had the dealer fix it under warranty. It was not difficult to replace, but you had to pull the steering column to get at it. That was a little more complicated than I wanted to get in to, so I called the dealer to come & get it. It worked out that at the same time he did all of the 100 hour stuff.

Works fine & I now shoot a little WD 40 into the piston from time to time to keep it lubricated.

My tc29 has just come down with that same symptom. Penetrating oil cured it, however I had the dealer make a note of the problem so the piston can be replaced in the future. A question for you, was I clipped by paying $21.oo for the oil filter and $36.00 for the hyd. filter at the NH dealer? I'm doing my 50hr service and that seemed high. ps.. every Boomer I looked at last winter had that same tilt steering problem, so it IS widespread!!! ....
